Ensju vs Uptime Kuma
We genuinely love Kuma. It's the best self-hosted uptime tool there is. This page is the honest answer to a different question: when does running your own monitoring stop making sense?
Let's be clear up front: if you're running a home lab and want a slick self-hosted uptime dashboard for free, install Uptime Kuma. It's excellent, it's open-source, and we're not going to pretend a hosted subscription beats $0 on value-for-money. Plenty of the people who build Ensju run Kuma at home too.
But self-hosted monitoring has one structural flaw it can never fix: it runs on your infrastructure. The box hosting Kuma is a box that can go down, and when it does, it takes your monitoring down with it, silently, at exactly the moment you need it. It probes from one place (your network), so a problem between your users and your service that doesn't touch your box goes unseen. And someone has to patch it, back it up, and renew its own TLS cert.
None of that matters much for a home lab. It matters a lot the day it's a paying client's uptime on the line. That's the line this page is about: Kuma is the right tool for watching your own stuff for fun; Ensju is the right tool the moment monitoring becomes something you're accountable for, to a client, a boss, or an SLA.

On price
On raw price, Kuma wins and it isn't close: it's free. So don't switch to save money; you won't. Switch when the hidden cost of self-hosting outgrows the sticker price: the hour you spend rebuilding the Kuma VM after it died (and took your alerts with it), the outage you missed because your single probe sat inside the same network as the thing that broke, or the client who asked "were we actually down, or was it just you?" and you couldn't answer. Ensju starts free for 10 monitors, and the Homelab plan is $10/mo, priced as "stop thinking about it," not as "cheaper than free."
When Uptime Kuma is the better choice
If the only thing you monitor is your own home lab, you enjoy running your own services, and an occasional gap in coverage when the host reboots is no big deal, keep Kuma. It's a fantastic piece of software, you own your data completely, and there's no bill. We mean that: self-hosting is the right call for a lot of people, and Ensju isn't trying to talk hobbyists out of it.
The bottom line
Kuma is perfect until the box running it is the box that's down, or until it's a client's uptime you're being paid to watch. That's the day monitoring should live somewhere other than your own rack.
